What a video file carries

For our two-second test video, EXIF Scanner listed 72 fields. The main ones: duration 2 seconds, resolution 640 × 360, codec avc1, creation date, and coordinates in the QuickTime location tag. The time zone was worked out from the location: Europe/Istanbul.

Why video dates look different

Video files usually store creation time in UTC. Our test video stored CreateDate as 16:42:07, which is 19:42:07 in Istanbul. Keep that gap in mind when you compare the report with the clock on your phone.

Removing location and dates from a video

After the report, use "Prepare for sharing", "Remove GPS only" or "Remove all metadata". On our test video all three removed the GPS location. "Prepare for sharing" and "Remove all metadata" also set the 6 date fields to 0000:00:00 00:00:00; "Remove GPS only" left the dates alone. The 63 fields left are technical details such as codec, resolution and duration, which the video needs to play.

Cleaning uses ffmpeg's stream copy: video and audio are not re-encoded, so quality and file size stay practically the same.

Frequently asked questions

Will video quality drop?

No. The video and audio streams are copied as they are, not re-encoded. Only the metadata changes.

Which video formats are supported?

MP4, MOV, M4V and WebM, up to 200 MB.

Do phone videos store location?

Usually yes, if the camera app has location access. The report shows the location on a map if there is one, and says so if there is none.
