HIDE FACES AND PLATES
Draw a box with your mouse or finger over every face, license plate or piece of text you want to hide. In the downloaded copy the boxes are solid black. We do not blur, because blur can sometimes be reversed; nothing of the picture is left under a solid black box.
With a mouse or touch: drag on an empty part of the photo to draw a box, drag a box to move it, and drag the corners of the selected box to resize it. While your finger is on the photo the page does not scroll; hold outside the photo to scroll.
With a keyboard: "Add a box" puts a box in the middle of the photo and selects it. The arrow keys move the selected box, Shift with the arrow keys resizes it, and Delete removes it. Move between boxes with Tab; Ctrl+Z undoes the last change.

Small preview images embedded in the file are removed with every option, because they hold the photo without the boxes.
The boxes are applied on our server to the copy of the file you uploaded for analysis; like every upload, that file is deleted from public access after 24 hours, kept up to 24 more hours in an admin-only area, then permanently deleted. The redacted copy is deleted from the server once it has been sent to you. In the downloaded file the black boxes are burned into the pixels; the original photo on your device is unchanged.

Frequently asked questions
Which photo and video formats are supported?
Photos: JPG, TIFF, HEIC, WebP, PNG, and AVIF (up to 50 MB). Video: MP4, MOV, M4V, and WebM (up to 200 MB). Videos can be cleaned too: "Download safe copy" removes the location and dates, and "Remove everything" removes all metadata. ffmpeg's stream-copy method is used for this, so the video is not re-encoded and loses no quality.
What can EXIF data reveal about me?
Where, when and with which device you took a photo: the GPS location shows the place, the timestamp shows the time, and the camera or device model shows what you used. The location is added as GPS tags when location access was on while the photo was taken; EXIF Scanner reads and shows that data if it is there. EXIF data itself isn't dangerous; the risk depends on what is still in the file and who you share it with. GPS coordinates in particular can reveal your home or places you visit often.
What does the safe copy do?
It downloads a copy without personal details such as the location, dates, name, copyright and serial numbers, ready to share. The photo itself stays the same.
Can I hide faces and license plates in a photo?
Yes, in photos. "Hide faces and license plates" in the report lets you draw up to 50 boxes over the photo with a mouse, a finger or the keyboard; our server burns them as solid black into a copy of the file you uploaded. There is no blur, because blur can sometimes be reversed. Small preview images embedded in the file are removed with every option, because they hold the photo without the boxes. JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF keep their format; HEIC comes back as JPG, and TIFF as JPG (PNG if it has transparency).
Do Instagram and WhatsApp remove EXIF data automatically?
Not always. Instagram strips GPS and camera data from public posts, but not reliably from DMs. WhatsApp's photo mode removes most metadata, but sending a file as a document preserves all of it. The safest approach is cleaning it yourself before sharing.
Can I check and clean several photos at once?
Yes, up to 10 photos or videos at a time. You can choose them, drag them in, paste them (Ctrl+V) or, on Android, send them straight from the gallery: after you install the site as an app in Chrome, select photos in the gallery, tap Share and choose EXIF Scanner (Safari on iPhone does not offer this; there, use "choose a file" and pick several photos from Photos). They are read one after another, and the list shows each file's location, date and device. Pick "Remove location (GPS) from all", "Remove all metadata from all" or "Safe for social media" and the ready files download as one ZIP; if the files are too large for this device, they download one by one instead. The ZIP is built in your browser without extra compression, so it does not touch the image or video. Each file keeps its name plus a suffix for what was done: -no-location, -clean or -safe; duplicate names are numbered like "photo-clean (2).jpg". A file that cannot be cleaned shows the reason in the list, and the others still download. Each file is deleted from public access after 24 hours, kept up to 24 more hours in an admin-only area, then permanently deleted.
Can I share the cleaned photo as a link with Image Share?
Yes. After you download the cleaned copy, "Share the cleaned copy" ("Share the redacted copy" if you drew boxes, "Share the cleaned files on Image Share" for a batch) opens zirzibit Image Share in a new tab with the file ready there. You choose how long the link stays open and start the upload yourself; until then the file is not uploaded to Image Share. Image Share is free, needs no account, closes the link after 1 hour, 24 hours or 7 days (24 hours at most for video) and can add a password or view once. Types Image Share does not take (TIFF, for example) and files over its limits (images 20 MB, HEIC 50 MB, video 95 MB) are not sent, and the reason is shown; when the files are large enough to download one by one, sending a batch is off.
HOW TO READ AN EXIF REPORT
What is EXIF data, and what does the report show?
EXIF is the set of tags a camera or phone writes into the file: capture date, device model, shooting settings and, if location access was on, GPS coordinates. You can't see them when you open the photo, but they travel with the file. EXIF Scanner reads the tags, groups them, and shows the location on a map when there is one. It works as an EXIF viewer and metadata viewer with nothing to install, on a phone or a computer.

These values come from the EXIF Scanner report for a test JPEG we tagged like a phone photo. The file carried 37 fields in total.
Reading location, date and device fields
- No location means no location. The tool only shows coordinates stored in the file; it never guesses a place from the image. Photos that came through WhatsApp or Instagram usually have had their location removed.
- Capture date is not file date. DateTimeOriginal is when the photo was taken, not when the file was downloaded or copied.
- Video times are often in UTC. Our test video stored its creation time as 16:42 UTC, which is 19:42 in Istanbul.
- Metadata is not proof. These fields can be edited. The report shows what the file says, not that it is true.
How much can you remove before sharing?

For videos, "Download safe copy", "Remove location only" and "Remove everything" are available. On our test video all three removed the GPS location. "Download safe copy" and "Remove everything" also set the 6 date fields to 0000:00:00 00:00:00; "Remove location only" left the dates alone. The video is not re-encoded, so quality does not change.
