PHOTO LOCATION FINDER

Find where a photo was taken

If a location was saved when the photo was taken, EXIF Scanner reads the coordinates and shows the place on a map. If none was saved, it says so plainly; it never guesses from the image.

Photos: JPG, TIFF, HEIC, WebP, PNG, AVIF (up to 50 MB). Video: MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM (up to 200 MB).

Where the location is stored

If the camera app had location access, the phone writes GPS coordinates into the file at the moment of capture. Our test file's report had GPSLatitude 41.025631, GPSLongitude 28.974158 and GPSAltitude 62 m. Those coordinates fall around Galata in Istanbul, and the map in the report marks that point.

Why no location shows up

To see the location, ask whoever took the photo for the original file. Files sent through WhatsApp as a document keep their metadata.

Location in videos

Phone videos store location in a different field. In our test video the coordinates sat in the QuickTime location tag, and EXIF Scanner read them and put them on the map just as it does for photos.

How reliable is it?

Phone GPS is usually accurate to a few metres outdoors; indoors and between tall buildings the error grows. Coordinates can also be edited after the fact, so the report shows what the file says, not proof that it is true.

Frequently asked questions

Will a photo downloaded from social media show a location?

Usually not. Instagram and WhatsApp (photo mode) remove location data when the photo is shared, and the report will show that no location is stored.

Do you guess the place from what is in the picture?

No. EXIF Scanner only reads coordinates stored in the file. It does not estimate a location from buildings or scenery in the image.

How do I turn location saving on or off on iPhone?

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera. Photos taken while this is off have no coordinates written into them.
