ANDROID PHOTO LOCATION

Android photo location: see it and remove it

Android phones also write coordinates into photos when the camera has location access. Google Photos shows that location but cannot remove one the camera added. To remove it from the file itself, upload the file here.

What Google Photos can and cannot remove

According to Google's help page, Google Photos only lets you edit or remove estimated locations; a location added by the camera cannot be edited in the app. Sharing differs too: camera-added and manually added locations are shared, locations estimated by Google Photos are not.

Removing the location from the file

Upload the photo here. If the report shows a location, "Remove GPS only" deletes just the location and keeps the date and camera details; 29 of 37 fields remained in our test file. "Prepare for sharing" also removes the dates and author fields. Share the clean copy you download.

Stopping location on new photos

Turn off the location tag (save location) option in the camera app's settings, or remove the camera's location permission in the phone's app permissions. Menu names differ by maker (Samsung, Xiaomi, Pixel).

The Google Photos details come from Google's help page Understand, find & edit your photos' locations.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't I see "Remove location" in Google Photos?

According to Google, that option is only for estimated locations. If the camera added the location, the app cannot remove it; upload the file here to strip it.

Does removing the location reduce photo quality?

No. Only metadata fields change; the image is not recompressed.

Is the location removed from Android videos too?

Yes. For MP4 videos all three cleaning options remove the location.
